Reading Strategies


What do an army general, a basketball coach, and an architect have in common? They all draft plans to help them jump into their work. As a reader, you can make plans for your reading. Having some strategies in mind when you approach a reading passage will help get you started in the right direction.

Tips for becoming an Active Reader:

  • Preview the passage and make predictions about it.
  • Connect the passage to your own knowledge and experiences.
  • Identify the genre of the passage.
  • Determine your purpose for reading.
  • Take notes as you read.
  • Adjust your reading speed to suit your purpose.
  • Quiz yourself as you read.

  • Notes can be written or typed in outline form, or presented as a keynote or powerpoint
